97 Years, 5 Days

On an absolutely gorgeous day in mid-September, Romina and Alex married at The Island House on the banks of the Wando River. In a day filled with personal touches, the beautiful welcome speech given by Romina’s father explains the most personal of all, the significance of the bride and groom’s reception book:

“Here another woman comes to mind, who one morning in 1938 was woken up very early by her Husband, asked to dress quickly, leave everything behind in Munich and join him in a dangerous drive to the southern border. The night before he had been warned by a friend who was a member of the Gestapo, that their name was on a list to be picked up that morning. They spend that night on a farm. Dressed as peasants they walked with a basket full of eggs across the German-Swiss border, dreading to hear a voice of Halt! by a nazi guard that might have become suspicious of their identity.
This woman is your great grandmother Else. Her wedding reception book, is the one that lies open here today for our guests to sign, leave a thought or a message for Romina and Alex. She married in Mannheim on September 10th 1922. Ninety Seven years and five days ago.”
.
Needless to say, there wasn’t a dry eye in the room.
